It mean the number of generation after an event. Most plants it refers to the number of generations after a hybred was made. In fish it generally refers to the number of generations after the fish was removed from the wild but it can also be the number of generations from a cross. So with killies and the strick guidelines against crossing different locations or species it should mean it is the first generation raised in captivity. Wild caught fish have WC after the name. From wild caught fish you raise F1s. From the F1 generation you raise F2s. This goes on until infinaty but most drop it the generation after F3 in fish as they will not bring any more money than fish without the generations noted. F1s are highly desired as they will give a great diversity for the location and you know they have not been inbred to much by bottle necks like you getting only a pair of the fish and raise 10 generations from that single pair. F2s are nearly as good as the breeders have not had enough time to select the fish in any one direction. WC, F1s, F2 will bring a bit more when selling the eggs or fish because of this.

In the Killie's names, what do the #'s stand for? Like 98/02-what does that mean? Thanks, jeffcanbefound@aol.com

I found this question in the other thread. The answer to this one is location and year of collection. If you collect from 100 different locations of the same river and give each sample a number/year code like Colleges do, you can see how they get them. So 98/02 is from mile marker or collection site 98 and was collected in 2002 from the best of my knowledge. Collection codes are set by the collector so each can have a slightly different meaning.

It's true that how collectors allocate location IDs varies, so no hard and fast rule can be given explaining them. However, something like 98-2 is more likely to refer to the collection year (in the case 1998) and the 2 would indicate the location number. Most collectors include the year in the designation.

I learned this just a few weeks ago about the 98-2 on killietalk. Thanks for setting it straight in the thread Barry. I was right about year and collection spot but in reverse.
