Anyone feeding flaked food to their killies? |

I got a gift bag at a local aquarium club, and it contained a can of Tetra min. Basic stuff I remember using 40 years ago to feed my guppies and mollies. Yellowish can, brown lid.
For grins, I sprinkled some in a tank burgeoning with Riv. hartii fry. They went nuts for it. Seems like all the killies will eat it, and it sure is handy when you're in a hurry.
Any reason not to? Any recommendations on brands? There's a staggering amount of brands available now - Hikari, Ocean Nutrition, Tetra, Aquarian, just to name a few. Any downsides? I've heard 'killi voodoo' priests saying flaked food makes fish sterile, and I think there was some truth to that with marine fish a few years ago. But, hey, anything that makes 'em grow fast and breed readily, works for me.
I'm still feeding live foods of course, but in the summer out here, weirdly there are hardly any mosquito larvae, daphnia have slowed down, and blackworms are hard to get. Grindals are fine, but hey, variety is the spice of life.

Matt,
I feed my adult fish the Omega One freshwater formula flake. The fry get either HBH seafood flake or color flake from Kens Fish. I also feed them freeze dried bloodworms. They also get cultured live foods but as you note, summer live food productivy wanes indoors due to warm temperatures. Live bbs are added to the adults diet as other live food options decrease. Seems that several of the most experienced hobbyists in the MKA feed flake food to their fish as part of a varied diet to include live and frozen food.

I use the same food, my fish gobble it down as well. I figure a good mix of food is good, and tetra products seem to be readily taken, with no adverse effects. Even Diapterons will eat tetra foods..

Jack Wattley, the discus breeder, uses only prepared food for his fish. I don't know if it is flake or pellet, though. No frozen, no live to bring into breeding condition, only prepared food. I certainly don't think killies are trickier than discus.
