I have a slew of questions, but ill try to keep it small as i can pretty much get the rest of the info on this site great place to start for beginners read this!Beginner guide Im glad i did i found this link in the auction part of AKA.So for the few questions

1. Im more interested in owning (Fundulopanchax)Fp or any type of beginner killi. Any suggested strain that does well in a 3-5 gallon tank? I dont want to keep more then a Pair, and they will be kept as just pets.

2. I would like to start them as eggs to get the feel of raising them on my own. Sounds fun and interesting any suggestings as starters for materials? Im willing to feed them live baby brine shrimp i have experience in raising them hehe when i use to raise bettas.

3. Any local Breeders in HAWAII?? Best way to learn is from those who already have there hands wet with experience hehe. I just want to see first hand what im getting into, and im more of a visual person.

Im glad that a site like this exists so much info here! I almost just dove into it with no knowledge and was about to purchase eggs from ebay haha. Im glad i didnt!

First, many fundulopanchax are larger fish and rquire a 10 gal or bigger. Of the "5 gal size" try for scheeli or a strain of gardneri. Do not go for eggs unless there is no other way to get them. Get two pair and put them in two tanks. This way if you lose a fish, you still have a pair. Lose 2 fish and you have a 50-50 chance of still having a pair. Postage is as costly as fish and two pair are about the same postage as a single pair. You can get eggs and hope after waiting about 3 or 4 months you have at least one of each sex. Kind of dissapointing if you get all of one sex. Also eggs do not fish guarantee. Buy a dozen eggs and maybe not get more than a single or a couple of fish, then it is a wait to see what sex the young turn out to be. Buy a couple of pair and get eggs from them to raise. Remember most killies are 1 to 3 year fish. The hobby is usually to maintain generations of them. Right now I don't know any killie people in HI. Do not be afraid of ordering from an AKA member on the continent. Review my beginners info at

It may answer a lot of questions for you.

Mademan on Aquabid is in Honolulu and is offering eggs of several species (Fp. and A.). I received A.Marginatum eggs from him, and while the hatch rate was not great, he was very helpful in suggesting tricks to improve the rate and then providing more eggs.

@wshenefelt thanks for suggestion of 2 pairs never thought of it that way, are Killies that sensitive after they arrive in the mail? Never had to mail away for fish before. Then again after being tossed around and handled like a package id be kind of worried too. Looks like ill be setting up 2, 5 gallon tanks then no biggie just want to see what these fish could live at comfortably without stressing them out. I have read some readings that they could survive comfortably in a 1 gallon as a pair. more of the Aphyosemion or Fundulopanchax F.gardneri or F.Walkeri. Not sure how that holds true, or he did a lot of water changes.

@mikev Awesome! so i have hope of a breeder in hawaii thanks for the info! ill go check out aquabid, and probably try to contact the seller.
