To pick a starter species it helps to know what food and water you can supply. Live food or frozen food or only flake food? What are your water conditions: temperature (unheated since small tanks and heaters do not go well together - also some species like it cooler, maybe down to mid or low 60's), hardness, pH? Do you like big or small fish? What size tank(s) do you have available? Most Aphyosemion species are best bred in small tanks(2 to 5 gallon). Fundulopanchax are more active and larger tanks are preferable (5 to 20 gallon depending on species temperment and size). Usually Funduloapanchax species are less picky on hardness (make that softness) and foods. Not all of them though. Also your location will determine who has what species of fish near you. I have 2 5.5 gal tanks unheated and ill probably feed them frozen brine shrimp till i can get my hatchery set up
