#1 sources of eggs
mikeg Posted on: 2012/8/1 19:13
Hello, I am a high school science teacher in central PA. A few years ago I tried hatching killifish from eggs in one of my basic biology classes. The kids loved it, but for one reason or another I didnt do that lab for the last few years. I was going to try it again this year, but my online supplier seems to have vanished. Does anyone have contact info for a good supplier of eggs (any hardy, easy to handle species would work) who might have some to sell that would be ready to hatch after mid september? - thanks - Mike

A possibility is to check the current F&E (fish & egg listing) on this site. I apologize for how often that data is horribly dated.

http://www.aka.org/UserFiles/File/felpdfs/currAKAFEL.pdfk

There are also auctions on this site. At the moment there are no eggs offered, but watch http://auction.aka.org/

I was hoping there would be mention of back auctions, so you could see who had offered eggs.

There are also affiliate killifish clubs around the country. The whole list is at...

http://www.aka.org/aka/modules/content/index.php?id=20

The following are "sort of " close to you. Get a hold of their contact person & they could be considerable help. They also have meetings and in the summer (before school) they might be fun to visit & pick up eggs. Negotiate ahead though.

http://sheneskillies.com/paka/paka.htm
http://www.chesapeakekillifish.org/

Summer, especially this horrendously hot year, inhibits shipping of killie and eggs.

What specially are you doing with the killie eggs. Had a friend in the Chicago area who bred eggs in his junior high classes, even lending students killifish pairs for the weekend!

Also at Argo High School they developed an embryology unit using (the relatively small) Epiplatys dageti eggs. I can just imagine hooking up a microscope to a video projector!

Oh, if the AKAers are no help, there is also www.aquabid.com

My few experiences there (with plants) were good, but please try the sources above first.

Good luck & all the best!

Scott,

The Fish & Egg listing is in the BNL, which is posted promptly each month. Of course, it is true that the BNL is only available for members.

I suggested to Mike that he post here, hoping that some kind member would offer eggs. I think we should support such projects for a number of reasons. Unfortunately I did not have eggs myself.

It might be good to post the previous month F&E listing in a public area. I assume Tom Grady, who is taking over as webmaster, will consider that.

Thanks for the links.
What I want to use the eggs for is part of my lesson on What is life? Is something alive even if it doesn't look like it? What are the characteristics of living things? The other thing the eggs are really nice for is showing the importance of water to life ( at least as we know it). And, yes, the new fry look really really cool under the microscopes, so they make a great reinforcer for our introductions to microscopes lab.

I should have some Oryzias latipes gold medaka rice fish or other rice fish eggs at that time. I might have some guentheri eggs at that time. Contact me. Bob Meyer

Mike,

There are many teachers on this forum, it's good to see one using this site ;) I have several species I frequently list on aquabid, as does another MKA member who is also a teacher that allegedly might possibly have extra eggs around to share. I have some fantastic Fp. gardneri Innidere that would make a great choice for your project.

Scott
