I was out at Lake Arthur in Butler, PA. I went fishing for stripers no luck. I have a cast net permit and caught alewives for bait. Well I was pulling the alewives out of the net when I stumbled on a few Fundulus diaphanus killifish in my net. I was not using them for bait and had no where to keep them to take them home with me today. I was thinking of collecting a few specimens for my native fish tank. I have other killifish but I am interested to know how I would come up with a collection code. I realize I start out with the name Fundulus diaphanus as the scientific name. Do I just come up with a name to ID the location such as something like Fundulus Diaphanus Lake Arthur 2010 or something more specific like Fundulus Diaphanus Lake Arthur 528 2010. 528 being the road closest to where I caught them. Or should I use something like Fundulus Diaphanus Prospect 2010 as that is the nearest town to where I caught them. I want to know what I should do to properly assign a collection code and name. Anyone know if I can breed them and trade their offspring for other fish or sell them? I know you can't sell them if they are caught but if I breed them can I distribute them? I really would like to know how to assign them a collection code along with their scientific name. Thanks.

They are all surviving good. Today I finally was able to get ahold of some brine shrimp eggs that hatched for me so the killifish will get live food finally. I have been feeding a liquafry food. I am hoping that with live food they will start to grow faster. I have 8 Gardneri fry growing. I hope that once I get a few pairs I can sell enough of them to buy a membership in the AKA. I am selling killifish eggs on aquabid of Fp. Gardneri Misaje under the username Tomskillifish. It is an auction for 10+ eggs. I want to sell pairs of fish but nothing is ready yet. So I can join and get the newsletters in the mail I am selling eggs. I currently keep Fp. Gardneri Misaje, Fp. Gardneria Clauseni Akure, Aphyosemion Striatum LEC 93/29, and Aphyosemion Australe Orange. I currently am only breeding the Misaje. I plan to within the next few weeks start working with the Aphyosemion Striatum LEC 93/29. I have had them before but have had trouble breeding them. I have gotten eggs a couple of times but they fungus. So my goal is to actually get them to lay eggs and hatch. I was thinking maybe storing them on peat would help liek it did for the Fp. Gardneri Misaje. I have bred the Fp. Gardneri Clauseni Akure before but that has been a couple of years and the group I have now is all new. I plan to set them up at some point. They are one of my favorite killifish. Although recently getting a pair of Fp. Gardneri Misaje through oddball pets in pittsburgh I have grown to like them best. Actually I had to request them as they only had males left. Eric Bodrock sells the oddball their killifish and he brought in a pair for me to buy. Once the Fp. Gardneri Misaje got settled and became less skittish around me ,as they were completely terrified if I even entered the room, I fell in love with their great personalities. It was cool once I got them breeding for me. I got them to breed while they were still skittish if they noticed me come into the room. So I was going to go to bed as I have all my tank in my bedroom, They help relax me and get me off to sleep, and well they were breeding in the spawning mops and since they had not noticed me I went back to the living room and let them do their thing. They layed alot of eggs but only the current 8 hatched out. I think because they are young the eggs were not as fertile. Well I have to go and take care of the fish. Time to feed the fry. Hopefully being fed live food will get them to grow quicker for me. I am just nervous they won't all make it. So far though I have not lost any of the original 8. Hopefully I can earn enough money to join the AKA. I am only going to use what I earn from fish breeding to pay for it as I am in college and work a minimum wage job and that has to pay for my car.

Never mind I just found out. What it is. Right now I have bills to pay and fish to take care of so I can't join right now. Is there anyway to get a copy of that without joining?

What is JAKA? I am not a member of the AKA. I just am a forum user. How do I get JAKA so I can read it? Thanks.

Ok so I have been trying to figure out what is an acceptable name for my killifish. I got them as Fp. Gardneri Clauseni Akure but I was informed by another killifish keeper that it should be classified as Aphyosemion Gardneri Akure. So what is the acceptable name and why are there two different names floating around? I am slightly confused? To me they look exactly the same. For Now when I do breed them and sell them to a local pet store in Pittsburgh called Oddball Pets I plan to sell them as Fp. Gardneri Clauseni Akure as that is what I know them as and what they were sold to me now twice as. Once from a person my aunt knew in Ohio that she bought her killifish from when she use to keep them and again I got the name Fp. Gardneri Clauseni Akure again when I purchased them again from a fellow who lives in Oregon. I want to know how it is determined that Fp. Gardneri Clauseni Akure is a Fundlopanchax or Aphyosemion Gardneri Akure is classified as an Aphyosemion they are clearly the same exact fish so what is the proper name and why? I really would like as much information as I can possibly get about what the proper name is and why. I want to know for my own personal knowledge. Are both names acceptable. Are they different fish and there is just something I don't know about them. They seem to be at the very least from the same area in Africa. So let me know what is the proper name. thank-you

The fellow I traded for some had raised his on flake food as adults and they have no idea what blackworms are. I had to actually email him and ask him what they eat as they would not touch live food. So I was taken back as all my fish seem to love blackworms. Anyone know how to convince them to eat blackworms so I can get them ready for breeding. Thanks. I know flake food will keep them healthy but it will not get them to breed easily if at all. Thanks.

I meant after the 21 day incubation can I store them longer than that or will they die? If so how long can I wait after they have incubated to hatch them? Do I have to hatch them on day 21? Thanks.

I was storing the eggs on peat. How long after they are ready to hatch will the eggs remain viable? days, weeks, months, years? I am just curious. Thanks.

I finally found somebody with a pair of them. I use to keep them but they died out due to genetic issues. Lack of new genetics made them funny. I traded some Fp. Gardneri Misaje eggs and some of an aquarium plant for a pair. I can't wait for them to arrive. I have been trying to get this strain for 2 years since mine were no longer breeding good quality. So now I get to start working with this strain again. This time I think I am better prepared as this is one of the first strains that I kept when I got into keeping killifish. It was only the third type of fish I ever had in my life. The others were 1 betta and a pair of Aphyosemion Striatum of some sort. The akure strain was my first time that I was successful breeding fish and the first one I ever raised was an accident he just showed up in water change bucket. This time I think I can get them to lay more eggs like my Fp. Gardneri Misaje are laying eggs now.

Actually I don't use gravel with the Misaje tank. I only did that with the akures and that is because I did not know better. The tank I have the Misaje with is bare. Just check out oddballpets.com the store is junky looking from the outside and inside is not the nicest but when you look in the tanks they have alot of hard to find fish and great quality products to sell. Their fish are healthy and if they are concerned something is not they write Not for Sale on the tank and won't sell them until they are sure they are fine. Some fish are bred at the store, some are purchased, and some are bought from local breeders. Last time I was there they had probably 4 or 5 differrent types of killifish. Fp. Gardneri Misaje, Aphyosemion Striatum of some sort, Aphyosemion Australe, Golden Wonders. They carry food in bulk very reasonably priced. Blackworms are what I mostly go there for. They have tons of different starter cultures to pick from for fry food. They have all sorts of awesome plants that come in. seriously they are really great. The staff is knowledgable and if they don't know they take a minute to go over to the computer and pull stuff up on the internet and research it. Certain things are expensive such as heaters and tanks but if you can not find something you really want then this is the place to go. They just expanded into saltwater tanks. I am considering starting my first salt water tank with a couple of Clownfish but I want to do more research before I get into that. Really the store is great and one of my favorite pet stores to go to. They sell discus fish but they are to expensive for me but for what they are they are priced fairly.
