I was successful in raising a good sized batch of fry by picking the eggs and storing them on damp peat in a small covered container. Some fungused, and I removed those, but the rest were good.

There are other populations of intermittens running around. Bator is one of them. Didn't the fish come with contact information from the seller? By the way, Collier has elevated intermittens to species status, so your fish is actually Fp. intermittens Etuku, or Bator, or something like that.

Are you sure you need a reflector? One of the 'problems' with LEDs is that they are unidirectional, so little light shines off to the sides. The light only in the direction the bulb is pointed.

I have the 2011/12 KEY standings calculated, but have been having difficulty posting them to the website at this time. So, until I get some time to work this out with the webmaster, you can request an Excel version of the complete standings directly from me. Keith Cook KEY Chair kcook@sdgdocs.com

The main reasons to let tap water age are to let chlorine which may be added to sanitize the water dissipate, and to let tap water reach temperatures and dissolved gas levels that match aquarium conditions. If chloramine is used in your tap water to sanitize it, you have to add a water treatment to break the chloramine and then neutralize the resulting chlorine and ammonia.
So I guess the answer to your question depends on how/if your tap water is treated.
Welcome to killies. Good luck with your rachovii.

Here's what I do. After covering the peat with a couple of inches of water in a tray for a day or two, I pour the whole mess into a taller container. I use a plastic quart deli container that you might buy potato salad in. I make sure there are 5 or more inches of water. This usually results in several more healthy fry.

It really depends which side of the pond you are on. In Europe you will see both bualanum and elberti as recognized species with most of the available populations being elberti. Over here, we just recognize elberti.

If they are fully eyed up and don't hatch in water, try force hatching some of them. I like to put them in little bottles and shake the snot out of them. If they fry then hatch and are fine (i.e. are not sliders and are normal looking), I would force the rest of them.

It is not unusual for Rivs to have a bit of a hunchback. Nor do they tend to move a lot. Nowhere to go I guess.....
Sounds like they are behaving normally. They will lay super big eggs when they start to lay them.

Just took a look. Some of my females have a very slight dark color in the fins, but I wouldn't call it even a pattern. More of a dusting. It sure doesn't mirror the banding you see in the male's anal fin.
Of course comparing the shape of the anal fin will seal the deal.
I generally find these a very easy fish to breed. They will throw males that lack the red color, though. My last batch of fry actually had more blue males than red. Not an altogether unattractive fish, but not as nice as the red.
