Thanks! I tried the Levamisole already and it seems to have worked although I need to do a second treatment in a few weeks.

Fish Health & Diseases:: Preserved Gnatholebias hoignei available
I lost 3 Gnatholebias hoignei to a condition I have not seen previously, skin eruptions with scale-sized bubbles after the fish swelled and lost mobility. I suspect myxosporida simply based on past experience with SA annuals, but my eye (now singular) isn't up to snuff nor my tactile abilities to do a necropsy. I used to bring these strange cases to Ed Noga at the NCSU vet school, but he's now gone. Is someone still practicing fish or veterinary medicine and willing to take charge of these fish? I saved them in 70 percent isopropanol. Or you could forward this message to someone still active at a university and I could send them on. I'd surely love someone to find something publishable here and get the information out into the literature if it truly is different or at least unusual. - Bob Goldstein

Fish Health & Diseases:: Problem with N. Rachovii Beira 98
One of the most amazing killifish rooms I ever visited was in the SF Bay area. The owner specialized in photographing killifish - so he wasn't so much into crowding and breeding, but growing up the absolute best specimens and photographing them. He had, probably 500-600 tanks (most handmade, small units for just a pair of fish, with the female in a floating 'cage' so the male could court her, building up color, but not actually harm her.)

No filters.

No air except to hatch baby brine shrimp.

He had tanks in rows that were plumbed together and as I remember had some power filters serving as pumps to circulate the water from tank to tank.

He changed like 50% weekly if not more frequently across the tanks, by siphons.

The fish were stunning and healthy and his photos were jawdropping, and any fish you got from him, were in top health and ready breeders.

I think if you had a reliable auto water change system, you would not need filters or airation. Derek Lambert's fishroom in the UK when I visited had hundreds of tanks and again, no filters - light loads, lots of water changes as I remember (it's been a few years now.) Although he specialized in wild-type livebearers and corydoras, he had a fair amount of killies too in his setup.

Fish Health & Diseases:: Flubendazole for treating Ich and "Velvet"
Larry,

I think flubendazole is effective against a number of protozoan parasites, including velvet and probably ich, although I have never had a case of ich where I could try it.

I mainly use it prophylactically to guard against glugea infection. I add a small amount to the hatching water for Nothos. I rarely add it to larger tanks.

You should be careful trying it in situations where you have other critters, like shrimp. It is non=toxic to fish but will kill certain snails, for example. I once used it to rid a planted tanks of Malaysian trumpet snails. A ffew sequential treatments were required.

Barry

Thanks for the reply. As luck would have it, I have some flubendazole that I got from Charles a while ago. I'll try it along with the salt.

The last time I tried it at the recommended strength for hydra, the shrimp didn't seem to be effected.

Fish Health & Diseases:: N. Eggersi female bloated / ruptured stomach
Charles Harrison talked about killifish diseases at the last convention, and the mention of trailing feces reminded me of his diagnoses of two kinds of intestinal nematodes. It's covered in the latest JAKA, which should be in the mail about now. If that's what it is, then flubendazole might have worked. In any case, review his disease talk (in JAKA)and see if anything rings a bell. I agree this doesn't sound like bloat. - Bob Goldstein

Fish Health & Diseases:: What may cause fish to succumb to intestinal parasites?
Many old timers suggested that white worms are a great food, but should be combined with other foods because they tended to be constipation inducing. I tend to agree with that concept - partly because I believe it and partly because I cannot raise enough white worms to be a problem. Try reducing the proportion on white worms to half or less of the total diet.

Fish Health & Diseases:: Megalebias not eating
Scott ~

Thanks for your input (no one else had replied yet). I regret to say that she has since died. I force-fed her 3 times, and I was hopeful because I actually did see some feces on the bottom after this, but I think it was too little too late.

The problem wasn't that she would eat, it was that she couldn't seem to swallow. I tried treating with Fenbendazole, then Charles's Flubendazole, but neither had any effect.

My only hope is that I did spawn them once before she started going downhill, so hopefully I'll get some fry in a couple more month.

Thanks again,

Kurt A. What's the consensus for treatment?
I haves raised the temp up to 80f. Dosed with flub. Added a couple of teaspoons of rock salt.
The patient is an awesome specimen of F.fallax!
I believe he became I'll from the transition to a new home and fluctuating water temps.

Thanks!
