Orestias Valenciennes, 1839.

Mountain killifish

Valenciennes, A. 1839. Ichthyologie: Rapport sur quelques poissons d'Amérique rapportés par M. Pentland. l'Institut 7: 118.

Type species: Orestias cuvieri Valenciennes, 1846, by subsequent designation of Bleeker, 1864 [see Bleeker (1863a)].

Orestias Valenciennes, 1839: Valenciennes, 1858; Garman, 1895; Regan, 1911; Myers, 1931; Collette, 1977; Parenti, 1981, 1984a [list of species, synonymy, range],b [species flock concept],c [classification]; Villwock, 1986; Parker & Kornfield, 1995 [sister group relationship corroborated between Orestias and the Old World cyprinodonts of the genus Aphanius (= Lebias)]; Costa, 1997, 1998f; Parker, 1997.

[Two extreme views of Orestias species diversity may be found in the literature. (1) Parenti (1984a) with 43 species (47 in this list, with one species having been described since 1984, and three additional available names recognized here). (2) Villwock (1986) (and the Hamburg school of Orestias classification) with five species recognized.]

Orestias agassizii Valenciennes, 1846.

Nakedsnout Mountain Killifish

Valenciennes, A. 1846. L'Orestias d'Agassiz (Orestias Agassii, nob.) pp. 238-239, plate 536 [see nomenclatural note below] In: G. L. Cuvier and A. Valenciennes, Histoire naturelle des poissons. Libraire de la Société Géologique de France, Paris. Volume 18. xix + 505 pp., plates 520-553.

Type locality: Corocoro River, Peru. Valenciennes noted that specimens from San Antonio de Esquilaches, Peru [Titicaca basin] also belong to this species.

Range: Through the Titicaca and Urubamba basins, Salar de Uyuni of southern Bolivia, and northern Chile, Parenti (1984a), Arratia (1982). [Because many populations of O. agassizii are now recognized as distinct species, the range of O. agassizii is no longer coincident with the entire range of Orestias: Parenti (1984a).]

[In Volume 18 of the Histoire Naturelle de Poissons and in the general Index three spelling variations of Orestias agassizii appear. These variations are tabulated below.]

Table 9. Spellings of the Orestias sp. named in
honor of Louis Agassiz in volume 18 of the
Histoire Naturelle de Poissons.

Orestias agassizii: Table of Contents, vol. 18, p. xv; list of plates, vol. 18, page unnumbered.

Orestias agassii: Original description, vol. 18, p. 238, general index.

Orestias agassisii: Plate 356.

[As a result of the actions of two first revisers agassizii is the correct spelling. This flows from the following history. Acting as a first reviser, Garman (1895) chose O. agassizii to be the senior synonym to O. agassii. Acting as a first reviser, Tchernavin (1944) chose the spelling O. agassii to be the senior synonym over both O. agassizii and O. agassisi, the latter being a spelling variation not noted by Garman (1895), but Garman had already chosen O. agassizii as the senior synonym to O. agassii. Stated in reverse chronological order, Tchernavin (1944) made agassisii the junior synonym of O. agassii, and Garman (1895) made O. agassii the junior synonym of O. agassizii. This is a satisfying resolution to the spelling of a patronym dedicated to Agassiz.]

Orestias Agassizii Valenciennes, 1846: Garman, 1895 [Garman, in noting two of the three spellings in Valenciennes' description, acted as a first reviser when he chose the spelling agassizii over agassii.]; Allen, 1942; Bertin & Estève, 1950 [syntypes] [misspelled with one "i"].
