Type locality:Pinarbaşi, approximately 10.5 km east of Emirdağ, Turkey, in the drainage canal of a spring fed pond, 39°02'53" N 31°19'38"E.
Etymology: Named for Wolfgang Villwock in recognition of his contributions to our knowledge of the genus Aphanius.
